Denver SEO – What Does #1 In Google Mean?

We've all been told that it is really important to achieve a #1 ranking in Google for a specific keyword…but why?

The answer is simple and complex at the same time.

Denver SEO – The Simple Part

When you have a #1 ranking in Google, you get a large percentage of the clicks for that keyword.  For example,

  • SEO Researcher (the top graph) says you get 56% of the clicks.
  • Chitika says you get roughly 34% of the clicks.
  • And Optify says you get 36%.

Denver SEO – The Complex Part

It is hard to pin down the numbers because there is a large standard deviation among studies.

What I say to my clients is that the #1 person on Google gets over 30% of the respective clicks for a keyword.  That way I'm being conservative…

Why Should You Care About SEO?

If you are looking to generate leads and sales online, then you need to generate online traffic.  One way to generate traffic is to increase your SERP or search engine results through search engine optimization.

You must understand that SEO or search engine optimization takes time.  There is no magic pill!  I tell my clients that it can take 3 to 12 months depending on the competitive nature of the keyword terms.

Keyword Research

The First Step To SEO Is Good Keyword Research

Denver SEO – 5 Keyword Research Tips

Step 1 – Study Your Competition

Create a list of your top 5 SEO competitors.  For example, I own fitnessfortennis.com.  The three largest traffic sources in the the "tennis" market are:

  1. tennis-warehouse.com
  2. usta.com
  3. tennis.com

Step 2 – Analyze Your Competition

Use Google Keyword Tool to look at what your SEO competition is doing.

  1. Go to: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
  2. Enter your competitors url
  3. Create a list of any keywords that relate to your business

Step 3 – Analyze Your List

Use Google Keyword Tool to see the SEO traffic of your keywords.

  1. Go to the left column and change the Match Types from "Broad" to "[Exact]".  This will show you how many searches there are for your respective keyword.
  2. Update your list with this info
  3. You are going to want to keep anything with 300 or more monthly keyword searches

Step 4 – SEO Keyword Selection

This last step is very important, so pay close attention.

  1. Go to Google Adwords and put in your keywords.  Keep any keywords that have a CPC (cost per click), of $2 or less.
  2. Go to Google.com and search for your keyword like this: "keyword".  Keep anything with less than 300,000 results.
  3. This should give you list of keywords that are related to your business, have relevant traffic, and are not overly competitive.

Step 5 – Double check your work

One additional step that I recommend is that you double check your work with a paid tool, such as Market Samurai or SEMRush.  I own both, and they significantly cut down on the keyword research time.

+++++

In conclusion, keyword research is the foundation of SEO.  Be prepared to spend time and resources on this or hire a specialist to do it for you.  It is that important!

After doing keyword research,

Understand WHERE you will get your traffic!

  1. SEO – Search-based traffic (Google, Bing)
  2. PPC – Paid display advertising (Google Adwords, MSN)
  3. Social Media – Social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, & LinkedIn
  4. Affiliate – An affiliate is someone who promotes a product or service to potential customers, in exchange for a commission on the sale when one occurs.

Do you know where your online traffic will come from?

Lead Gen 101: Do You Know Where Your Customers Are Searching?

Keyword research is the first step in building a website. Through research and analysis of your market’s keyword demand, you not only learn which terms and phrases to target, and you will gain valuable info about your customers as well. The importance of this information cannot be overstated – with keyword research you can predict traffic, understand competition, and develop traffic strategies.

The tools I use for keyword research:

  • Google keyword tool
  • SEMRUSH
  • Spyfu
